Building a regulated power supply is one of the best start-up projects for beginners. Besides, it can also be used for other future projects as well. A power supply is always an add-on for an electronics lab. The article will guide you on how to construct your very own power supply.
A power supply that can provide precise voltages in the 0 – 30Volts interval is what is to be constructed. To build this, the most important thing that is required is a high power transformer. Two power transformers with different specifications are used here. In addition to this, a bridge rectifier is also required to handle high voltages of about 400V at 35A.
All the components are accommodated inside a computer power source casing. In order to absorb extra heat that is emitted, an aluminum heat sink is added. A portion of the case is removed to accommodate a voltmeter and a few power resistors. These components are placed on top of the aluminum heat sink.
The power resistors are connected in parallel and an LM317 is used to control the resistor network. Copper wires are used to solder the components to the test board. The resistor network, LEDs, the fuse and a collection of wire connectors are placed on the front panel by making a few holes in the test board.
A maximum of 24V at 10A can be obtained using the transformer. The transformer is also capable of handling a maximum of 20A. The power supply can be increased or decreased by changing the number of transistors in the circuit.
